Gen Y Female 1

Uses internet - email (msn), Facebook and BBC World. Watches movies with friends (at Halls) and TV. Likes going to movies but this is a time dependant
Showing courtesy to others beliefs and values, considering where they might be coming from. You need to be aware of peoples minds and space.
Doesn't believe everything that is seen through the media and is aware that stories can be constructed
Cyberbullying is very disrespectful (has been cyberbullied). The fact that you can create an identity and then attack a person using words is horrible as words hurt
Relationships are different using text than in person. Example haveing a texting relationship with a boy is free and easy when on screen texting but when you meet in person it is very awkward (both parties) and when you go back to texting it is like nothing happened, so therefore it is not really real.
Prefers more one on one communication as it is more powerful and misses the simple forms of communication.
Thinks those that are using mobile phones are getting younger and younger and this is wrong as they will learn text language before real language
Is sad that traditionalism, which has built up over hundreds of years is leaving in a few
TV programmes distort others lives (re celebs) ...we choose to believe it because it provides gossip and entertainment
Is appalled at the exploitation of the Chilean miners story, with people writing fictitiously around what was a tragic event
Like watching Top Gear as helps to connect with her father who likes cars
Disrespect on Survivor makes good TV
What is disrespectful in real life is ok on TV as it provides entertainment, however young kids wouldn't know the difference (this would have an impact on their perceptions of what is right and wrong)
Dislikes bad quality in production of TV and ads. Dislikes Shortland street as the acting is bad and she finds it embarrassing
Thinks much of the music (particularly pop and remixes because where is the talent in that! (refers to Will Smiths daughter
Downloading music was okay because you are led to believe through the media that the musicians etc are rich and 'making it'
Romantic Comedies are depressing as they are not real
Movies are pretty predictable...likes movies that are not predictable and how 3D has made predictable movies more entertaining
Society is becoming more lenient with regard to respect because we hide behind media
We have changed in human society because of technology , likes seeing nature docos because its in its simplest form.
We are a lot less tolerable of each other in society however we are more tolerable with other cultures beacause media devices provide for a more level playing field
Magazines only portray how to help yourself, not how to help others
People could be more respectful ...we need to bring back respect for other people.

Gen Baby Boomer Male 2

Uses a wide range of Media including Stuff.co.nz. NZ Herald. Facebook. Linkedin, Waikato Times, Magazines and selective about TV. Is not a movie goer.
Respect is treating everybody as equals and giving due regard for peoples lives, no judgement, and with warmth. Integrity and experience are aspects taken into account regarding respect.
care should be taken when emailing as it is typed word and therefore no other indicators are seen by the receiver and therefore it can possibly taken as disrespectful as intention is hard to decipher in this context.
Texting should not be a substitute for a conversation and should accommodate who and what you are communicating about. Doesn't really use text in the function that it is used by the younger generation and spell checks texts before he sends.
Likes and uses text for keeping in contact with daughter and for micro coordinating with wife.
You earn respect in life and the newspaper (NZ Herald) and main website used (Stuff.co.nz) have gained his brand loyalty through earning his respect over the years (Has read the NZ Herald everyday for 15 years)
Thinks that the Paul Henry incident was disrespectful from all corners being from PH himself and from his employers and the way the whole thing was handled.
Talks about use of viral marketing in Youtube and the fact that it provides immunity from standards and seems to be done to appeal to a certain group of people. (talks about airnz campaign)
Anything that is free you place lesser value on
Quality of TV is at an all time low and is brain numbing. Only likes TV content that is of interest and has some form of education value
Current affairs is now like watching a magazine and is all about bums on seats and therefore very shallow.
Sifts through things including media and people because of available time
Huge generational shift in communicating, particularly noticed that in the work place the younger people (Late Gen X and Early Y) use email rather than phoning
Social media is increasing i.e Facebook. Likes it as a catch up tool with old friends and notifying events. Doesn't like looking into other peoples photos etc. Linked In is providing more rate of contacts and this could be because it is business social network, there appears to be more males using it.
Because of his business (marketing) uses Apple products, however, thinks their quality and design is fantastic.

Gen Baby Boomer Male 1

Respect is acknowledging that everyone is worth something
We need to respect things like authority because that is what makes the world work
There is freedom within rules
We are bought up in a society through school to be independent, where in fact it would be more beneficial to be interdependent as a society
Avoids interacting with media in the morning so as to focus on functions without filling time/space with noise
Only looks at headlines and if relevant will look more throughly or just pass over
Doesn't waste time with news media and is aware of the bias portrayed
Chooses a website for News because less ads
Likes efficiency in media and for media to be succinct
Prefers programmes that are about solving - i.e CSI, Castle, Chuck and likes to watch the light and fluffy ones with teenage family
Won't watch programmes that show disrespect towards the family - i.e Simpsons, Wife Swap,
Media is modeling relationships as you can take it or leave it. No emphasis on commitment and working together, it sensationalizes promiscuity and that to stay in relationship is almost boring (example Two and Half Men)
Likes gaming but not games that model possible realife scenarios (like shooting) more likes fantasy because it is not real
Dislikes news articles that glorifies bad behaviour, we spend lots of time affirming positive behaviour in the classroom and then the kids go home and turn on TV and the criminal and bad behaviour is affirmed.
They say texting has increased communication for young people however, it appears the relationships they are having appear to be of no great depth.
Media fills our days up with too much information for people to focus on worrying about what other people are doing rather than focusing on what needs to be done now
Media and Society tend to show more attention and respect towards the SPCA than the youth that are lying in our gutters and need our help (re a Media clip that talked more about increasing cows to calve)

Generation Y 1male

Key Notes

Broadcasters are paid to have an opinion (re Paul Henry), not as disrespectful as incident was made out to be - people should be a bit more liberal
Invasion into private life and delivering personal information particularly concerning very private matters is disrespectful - uses Wendy Williams American Broadcaster as example
Has no problem with Profanity or explicit material
Finds bullying via Facebook etc very disrespectful because of it's intention
Intention is very important behind our actions
If you don't like what you see then get off
Truth is important to respect,
In regard to social media and photos - particularly ones that you may take offence too. - That's the truth accept it happened or is happening - don't react, accept it
Portrayal on screen needs to be representative of the culture it represents otherwise its disrespectful - Finds Shortland Street respectful because it does this
Doesn't find the BK Ad with Women on Bikini's on Horseback ( there was a lot of media attention re this) disrespectful and thinks that women should find this liberating - however, if the woman were bigger that could be disrespectful bacuse th intention behind it would be to highlight weight issues.
Re Gaming reinforcing stereotypes in regard to the representation of women being that they all are made to be one particular way to be disrespectful, however when it comes to media, people would prefer to see good looking people, it's entertainment and therefore it is not a real image - it is a 'fun' image

Has a loyalty to Apple because of the Quality and aesthetics
Media is a form of communication and it is your choice to interact with it, knowing that how can you find something disrespectful when it is your choice to turn it on
Comedy allows disrespectful elements to be accepted
Reaction to disrespect is a bad idea....... to walk away is a better idea
Uses only facebook to deliver his personal information and "friends" etc should know that he is a comedian therefore they should also understand that if they find something to be disrespectful that it was not his intention, he was only having a laugh and therefore maybe shouldn't be a friend if they find it offensive

Tends to change how he communicates with people dependant on who they are and the required etiquette
Surrounds himself with friends who have a similar idea of what is respectful or not. If is doing just casual chat has no problem using texting or entering on FB but would change if in a deep an meaningful
Anticipates what someone else would find respectful and accommodates accordingly
Maintaing respect in a workplace is very important and if not done is detrimental to your job, your use of media to communicate to your employer can alter that.
Re - Representing his demographic - Believes that the standards of what they consider as respectful are very low, however this is relative
Believes that they have less focus on what is right and wrong
To many taboos have filtered down the generations
The standards of respect are going to get lower and lower
Respects people because he respects everybody is different
I care about what you want to do by letting you do what you want to do
Believes that Freedom is paramount and people should be able to do what they want to do (in regard to media)
